Prior to the nationwide implementation of NEET (UG), individual states and prestigious medical institutions such as AIIMS, JIPMER, IMS-BHU, KMC Manipal &amp; Mangalore, CMC Vellore, various deemed universities, and numerous state private colleges conducted their own entrance exams.
NEET was initially scheduled to commence in 2012, but the CBSE and Medical Council of India postponed it by a year for various reasons. The Government of India announced the test, which was first conducted on May 5, 2013, for students seeking admission to undergraduate and postgraduate medical programs. However, on July 18, 2013, the Supreme Court, responding to 115 petitions, cancelled the NEET exam and declared that the MCI could not interfere with the colleges' admission processes."

After the Medical Council of India announced the introduction of NEET-UG in 2012, several states, including Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu, strongly opposed it, citing significant differences between the MCI's proposed syllabus and their state syllabi. Although NEET 2016 was conducted in English and Hindi, it was later announced that from 2017 onwards, students could also take the exam in Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali, Assamese, and Gujarati. Kannada and Odia were subsequently added, allowing the exam to be taken in nine Indian languages as well as English. On July 18, 2013, the Supreme Court of India nullified NEET for admissions into all medical and dental colleges, ruling that the Medical Council of India could not conduct a unified examination."
In a 2013 announcement, CBSE planned to conduct the AIPMT on May 4, 2014, with the final decision on NEET UG to be made following the Supreme Court's verdict. The Central Board of Secondary Education is responsible for announcing the results and the All-India Merit List for NEET-UG, prepared according to the directives of the Supreme Court, DGHS, MCI, and DCI. The 2013 results were announced on June 5.
In 2013, the Supreme Court declared NEET illegal and unconstitutional. However, on April 11, 2016, a five-judge Constitution bench overturned this decision, allowing the Central Government and the Medical Council of India (MCI) to implement the common entrance test until a new ruling on its validity. The All-India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) held on May 1, 2016, served as the first phase of NEET. Students registered for Phase One could take the second phase on July 24, 2016, provided they forfeited their Phase 1 scores. These dates were established by the Supreme Court's order.
